Shocking News
In 2003, I got the news that my business unit was indeed moving out of state. There had been talk about it but I thought is was a couple of years out. I had briefly thought about living in the Chicago suburb where the headquarters was moving to, even thinking that it might not be so bad.
Nevertheless I had a week to give the company an answer as to whether or not I would move. You see, the deal was that my position was moving out of state and it was either move or not have a job with the company. While the powers that be assured me that they really wanted me to move even though they knew I was pretty established in my adopted city and had a mother to take care of, to boot. But when it came right down to it, I wasn't sure if I wanted to make another move. I was born in New York City, moved to Des Moines, Iowa after college, moved to Washington, DC and then my present city. I felt like I had paid my dues.
Decision of a Lifetime
I honestly wanted to tell the company to save the airfare and hotel money, I wasn't interested in moving. After consulting with a life coach, however, for some emergency coaching, I decided I needed to touch, feel and smell the "land" before I made such a momentous decision. Either way, I knew that whatever decision I made would be life-changing and vowed that I would never look back -- wondering if I had made the right decision.
Well, the trip was a disaster, and despite being open-minded about making the move, nothing during the trip convinced me that moving would be the best idea in the long run. In addition, I was having dreams that were telling me stay where I was. One night I woke up and the door to my walk-in closet was open. That door ALWAYS stays closed so I saw it as a literal sign of "doors" opening
Following My Dream
Beyond that, for about five years I had gotten restless in my corporate position. I had worked really, really hard and was burnt out. After 20 some years there were certain things I could do in my sleep. Trips that used to be exciting were beginning to become a hassle. Plus, I had been introduced to and became certified in feng shui and aromatherapy and was yearning to turn those into full-time businesses.
So, I decided that I could move out to the cold, snowy Midwest, away from friends and family and be that much further from starting my own business OR I could use this window of opportunity to earnestly pursue entrepreneurship -- convicted that it would all work out.
